Soldier's Heart by Gary Paulsen
"Soldier's Heart is a book about the civil war. It is about a First Minnesota Volunteer named Charley and his experience in the Civil War. The book showed that people would see their brothers die in front of their eyes but they couldn't do anything about it. This book was a great book and I would rate it an 8 1/2 out of 10 stars. It shows that Charley has a soldier's heart. The book Soldier's Heart is an amazing book.Gary Paulsen has written tons of great books especially for boys:
This book teaches a great many things about the civil war. One thing it shows is that the Confederate army was so poorly dressed. They wore rags and had fabric wrapped around their feet. This is because most of the textile mills were in the North. Also both sides had strong armies in each battle hundreds of people died. In the Battle of Gettysburg both sides lost thousands of men. Even though the confederate army was poorly dressed they still fought with bravery. Even so many of both armies fell they still fought on. Each side of the army had people cheering for them. When Charley was on a train to Fort Shelling he said people were along the tracks cheering. Even in the south the slaves were routing for the Union. One slave even came up to Charley and gave him a sweet roll and said,
"Thank you for what you are doing. I hope God keeps you safe from harm and brings you back to your family."
I would give this book 81/2 out of 10 stars. This is because the book wasn't as descriptive as a book with 10 stars is. It doesn't bring you to the battle scene as if you were in it. It would appeal to people who like war books. It would also appeal to people who like books about survivors. People who live through challenges, even when they are against all odds. This is what happens to Charley at the Battle of Gettysburg when the whole Union is commanded to retreat when the Confederates breech the wall, except for the First Minnesota Volunteers. This is why I would give it 81/2 out of 10. Go to your library and check out Soldier's Heart by Gary Paulsen. "
